How can you tell if your computer is infected with spyware?

Spyware is often designed to work quietly so users don't notice it's there. However, there are some tell-tale signs to watch for:

Invasive Pop-Ups – If ads are appearing on your desktop when you open your browser (or even without you doing anything), there's a chance your computer may be infected with spyware. Spyware can force your computer to show you ads against your will, or worse, scams with the intent to steal your personal information.

Browser Hijacking – If your browser homepage has changed without your input, there's a strong chance your computer is infected with spyware. This type of spyware may also override your search bar, editing search terms, and redirecting traffic to a compromised page.

Unexplained Slowdowns – If your computer is suffering from sudden and unexplained performance loss, there's a chance some malicious software is the culprit. Spyware, viruses, and other dangerous software can impact your computers performance significantly by communicating with other computers, reading and modifying your files, and consuming disk space.

Mysterious File Changes – If files on your desktop or drives have moved, or been deleted without your input, there may be spyware or a virus at work.

Emails You Didn't Send – If your sent email folder has emails in it you didn't send, then it's strongly likely that one of your devices with access to your email is infected with spyware or a virus. Spyware often works in the background while it watches your actions and sends that information to other places. Spyware designed to harvest email credentials may have stolen your sign-in information and your email might have been hijacked.

We strongly recommend changing your email password using a secure device as soon as possible if you suspect it has been hijacked.

How can I tell if there is spyware on my phone?

Spyware typically runs quietly in the background of your smartphone, but there are some tell-tale signs of infection to look out for:

Overheating – If your iPhone is inexplicably getting hot, there is a chance it's infected with spyware. Graphically intense apps like games draw a lot of power and can also result in a warm phone. But if your device is getting unusually warm during normal use (when it's not charging), you may want to scan for spyware.

Drained Battery – If your phone battery is draining too fast during normal use, there's a chance some malicious software is running in the background. Of course, there are normal apps that use more battery than others. Both Android and iOS phones have ways of monitoring the power draw of the apps you use. There may be spyware on your phone if your phone's battery life and app use don't match up.

Unusual Messages – Unsolicited text message spam, ads, and pop-ups appearing on your iOS or Android device are sure signs of an infection. Spyware and adware often appear together and work in concert to divert your data into the hands of bad-faith actors.

Abnormal Data Use – If you notice an unusual amount of data being sent by apps you don't know, there's a chance spyware might be the culprit. Spyware can use your own network to send the data it collects to its owner, triggering data limits and slowing down network speeds for you.
